![]() I do think this is a pointless turf war, and it isn’t even the most effective way to sell someone on going all in on Logic Pro, if that is one’s goal.Īpple has always championed the idea of a "hardware plus software" platform. Granted, I was fortunate enough to attend a program for undergrad that pushed us through several different DAWs, so I learned some nice things about each one, and even though the overwhelming majority of my work is done in Logic, Pro Tools and Ableton sit alongside it on my dock. Every DAW has its pros and cons, and plenty of companies snag features from the competition (for instance, when Live Loops came to Logic from iOS/iPadOS GarageBand, I saw the whole thing as a shot across Ableton’s bow). I wouldn’t be surprised if in that aspect alone, Ableton actually beats Logic in modifiability, though I admit minimal time or experience put into the Environment personally, so I can’t say for sure. Yeah… Ableton was borne of Max/MSP, then spun off into its own product, but can still integrate Max programs into itself. Don’t people know that Logic’s look/feel can be anything you want it to be? When they say ‘the workflow’ of one DAW is better than another, are they unaware that in Logic you can define the workflow? Rather than comply. When I see comparisons on this screen versus that screen, I almost laugh. It’s a full programming environment that I’ve never seen in another DAW and the forward looking design that sold me back in 2005 still holds up. From a mixer fader to a midi instrument, to scripting, you can modify the application to do amazing things. ![]() I mean, in Logic everything is a configurable object. ![]() In all those YouTube comparison videos nobody touches on the object orientation of Logic, pioneered by eMagic. How those Ableton users survive without comp’ing and mixing is a mystery, but perhaps it’s safe to say Logic is a “studio” DAW while Ableton is more a “performance” DAW. Price aside, my conclusion is that Logic 10.7 is still more feature rich and capable, but there are musician/producers that are more effective with the Ableton workflow. I’m bias, so don’t ask me! Here we are in 2022 so I reviewed a bunch of YouTube comparisons in case I’m out-of-touch. For starters, $199 vs $749 and if their using a Windows PC…well… I almost don’t have time for that. At least once a week somebody asks me “Logic or Ableton” and I always recommend Logic.
